I was surprised, when I read the Wikipedia entry on it, that Black ruefully believed most people didn't get it, and took the song's lyrics at face value. It reminds me of a famous case history in musical semiotics, the Louis Armstrong Paradox, whereby half the population believes 'It's A Wonderful World' is a sad song, and the other half believes it is not. I find it hard to believe that anybody who's seen the movie 'Good Morning Vietnam' can hear 'What A Wonderful World' and think it's a happy song, but hey, there you go. At any rate, I'm taking the songwriter's stated intent here and going with an ironic take on the song - this is an entirely fabricated vintage retro-style paperback cover using a famous painting by James Ensor called 'The Drunkards' (1883).
