ABOUT THE ARTFORM
Mata ni Pachedi means “behind the Mother Goddess” in Gujarati. Pachedi is a religious textile folk art derived from the Kalamkari style of painting, featuring the Mother Goddess at the center and her stories, the remaining cloth is then filled with images of devotees along with flora and fauna.
WHAT WE LEARN
Traditionally, the Pachedis were created in horizontal format with a set of rows filled with different stories from epics and local legends, and other consistent motifs. A horizontal panelled artwork will be created with a form of Mata (goddess) at the centre. Different figures, animals and other elements that go on each panel will be taught individually along with their placements, their relevance and the stories associated with them.
The format of the painting would be similar to the one shown in the promo. At the same time, participants would be mentored to create variations of their own.
We also learn about the history of the artform, its tradition and the cult associated with it.

SIZE OF THE ARTWORK
You may choose a size you are comfortable with. You can start with an A2 size and go upwards till the size of 45"x60".
THE ARTIST:
Artist Ajay Dilip Chitara belongs to one of the last surviving families who paint the Mata ni Pachedi. He is a talented artist with a special interest in the freehand drawing of pachedis.
