Last year, Seiko introduced a modern re-issue of the King Seiko Vanac, based on the original 1972 design. Here we offer one of those originals, powered by the well-known 5626 automatic movement found across the 56KS line. The faceted crystal is a defining feature of these models and gives the watch its distinctive character, a detail the modern re-issue completely misses.

This is an honest example that shows signs of careful use over the past 50+ years. The case remains unpolished and in overall very good condition, with some visible dings between 5 and 6 o’clock. The crystal has light surface wear, including a more noticeable scratch on the lower right facet between 4 and 5 o’clock.

The original bracelet is in excellent condition and close to full length, fitting wrists up to approximately 19 cm. The day display can be set to Japanese Kanji or English, and the quickset functions operate correctly.

While not recently serviced by us, the automatic movement performs strongly on the timegrapher, showing healthy amplitude and stable timekeeping.

Introduced in the early 1970s, the King Seiko Vanac line shows a very different side of Seiko. While most King Seiko models focused on restrained, almost conservative design, Vanac pushed in the opposite direction. Angular cases, bold colours, and sharply cut crystals gave these watches a more experimental, almost futuristic feel.

This was Seiko at a time when design mattered just as much as precision. The same high-quality 56KS movements were used, but housed in cases that broke away from traditional watchmaking. Faceted crystals, like the one seen here, became a defining element, catching light in a way flat crystals simply cannot.

Vanac models were produced for a relatively short period and never reached the same level of recognition as more classic King Seiko references. That has changed in recent years, as collectors have started to appreciate their distinct identity. They sit in a space between dress and design object, which is exactly what makes them interesting today.
