Recorded on July 4, 2005, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of the iconic MTV Unplugged series, the set revisits highlights from her acclaimed first two albums, Songs in A Minor (2001) and The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003), reimagined with stripped-down arrangements and a vibrant live band. The result is a collection that underscores Keys’ musicianship, vocal strength, and connection to her R&B, gospel, and soul roots.
Released on October 7, 2005, through J Records, Unplugged debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 196,000 copies sold in its first week—the highest debut for an MTV Unplugged album since Nirvana’s 1994 release, and the first by a female artist to top the chart. Its success reaffirmed Keys’ position as one of the defining voices of her generation, earning widespread praise for its warmth, spontaneity, and timeless live sound. The album went on to sell over one million copies in the United States and 1.5 million worldwide, and it was nominated for multiple awards, including the Grammy for Best R&B Album.
The set produced two singles: “Unbreakable,” a buoyant, hopeful anthem that reached number four on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Every Little Bit Hurts,” a soulful reinterpretation of the Brenda Holloway classic.
