Background
Synaptic Vesicle Glycoprotein 2A (SV2A) is a membrane protein found in all synaptic vesicles, the organelles responsible for storing neurotransmitters in neurons. It is the ubiquitous and primary isoform of the SV2 family. SV2A plays a critical role in regulating the exocytotic release of neurotransmitters. It is essential for priming synaptic vesicles, a process that makes them ready for calcium-triggered fusion with the presynaptic membrane. It is the direct molecular target for the anti-epileptic drug levetiracetam, underscoring its therapeutic significance in modulating neuronal excitability.
