About the Workshop:

This in-person class at the Center for Book Arts and the Grolier Club is taught by instructor Reid Byers. Imaginary Books are simulacra, parodies of books that are either lost, never were finished, or only appear in stories in other books. The making of an imaginary book is a creative project that is one part literary, one part artistic, and one part theatrical. It results in a liminal object that separates us only by a thin line from the door into Wonderland. This course consists of two sessions, the first at the members’ exhibition space at the Grolier Club (47 East 60th St) for a tour of some 100 imaginary books, and the second, the following day, at the Center for Book Arts for a planning and design session for the students’ own projects. Students are asked to find (or invent) an idea for an imaginary book (preferably a book referred to in a novel or play). We will go through the literary process of documenting the book bibliographically and the artistic process of planning and designing the appropriate simulacrum. We will examine the many options available for instantiating the idea as a book object and select one for each student project. The discussion will conclude with an outline of an appropriate theatrical process for displaying and presenting the imaginary book as well as other kinds of fictive art

Required Materials:

  • An idea or two for an imaginary book that the student would like to see realized
  • Paper and pencil or pen, or ipad, tablet, or laptop, or whatever you are most comfortable writing and designing with
All other materials will be provided by Center for Book Arts at no additional cost

This product is not worth the price.
The screws were still very loose even after being tightened, and they couldn't be made to fit tightly. This resulted in the entire product being loose and unsteady. I spent 31 US dollars on this defective item. I'm very regretful. I will return it. The overall workmanship is not perfect. It's too bad!!!

Smooth Rotating Organizer – Looks Great & Holds a Lot
This was a hit in our house. I originally got it for myself, but my wife quickly pointed out that she has about 20 perfumes while I only have a few colognes… so it officially became hers. The assembly was very easy, with clear instructions that made putting it together quick and straightforward. Once assembled, it has a really nice black wood grain finish that looks clean and modern on a dresser or bathroom counter. The 360° swivel works smoothly, which makes it easy to access everything without having to move bottles around. It also holds a good amount, so it’s perfect for anyone with a growing collection.

It is just like the picture and it is lovely. Plenty of room and under the tray it is large enough for changes with pendents. It is perfect for a girl and will be perfect for the amount of jewerly you take when traveling. Thank You!

Very nice little box.
This is a great little jewelry box. I don’t have tons of jewelry right now, so this fits everything well, and the leather-look material is very nice. I like the simple design and organization, and it is a nice size to travel with. It looks really pretty sitting on my dresser and goes with the aesthetic of my home well.

Pretty
Very nice simple jewelry box. My only issue is spacing to put necklaces is a bit tight, but there is plenty of room in this little guy. I put a lighter next to it, for size comparison.
