Mark Black History Month with a discounted bundle of The Right Thing to Do: The True Pioneers of College Football Integration and Raye of Light: Jimmy Raye, Duffy Daugherty, The Integration of College Football, and the 1965-66 Michigan State Spartans. From award-winning journalist Tom Shanahan, both titles confront the lingering issues of race in both college football and America.

In Raye of Light, the tale is told through the experience of Jimmy Raye. When the Fayetteville, N.C. native enrolled at Michigan State University in 1964, he did more than just enroll in a university hundreds of miles from home, he pioneered as Michigan State’s first Black starting quarterback and the first Black quarterback from the South to win a national title. History has not accorded Coach Duffy Daugherty, Raye, and the Spartans--including notable players like George Webster and Bubba Smith--proper credit for their roles in the integration of college football. In Raye of Light, Shanahan tells the story of how Daugherty integrated his Spartan teams in a time when leading college programs like the University of Alabama were still segregated, when it was unusual to see Black athletes at skill positions like quarterback, and when choices for outstanding Southern black athletes were either traditionally Black colleges or northern colleges opening their doors to nationwide recruits.

In The Right Thing to Do, Shanahan takes a broader view and addresses the official racial quota system in the 1960s college football world and the “Conspiracy of Silence” in the sports press, avoiding any mention of racial politics. That racial quota system was challenged by pioneers of the game, including SMU’s Jerry LeVias, the first Black scholarship player in the Southwest Conference; Houston’s Warren McVea, the first Black player to sign with a major Texas college; Wake Forest’s Bob Grant and Kenneth “Butch” Henry, the first Black scholarship players in a major Southern conference; and Gary Steele, West Point’s first Black football letterman.

“Tom Shanahan has always been ahead of the curve when it does to writing about race relations in sport—dating to the great, integrated Duffy Daugherty teams of the 1960s. The Right Thing to Do is another example his unique ability to go inside stories that need to be told in rich detail.”

—John Feinstein, best-selling author of 44 books, most recently Raise a Fist, Take a Knee

Award-winning author Tom Shanahan is a veteran sportswriter specializing in college football and, specifically, the integration of college football in the 1960s. He’s also written for NFL.com, Chargers.com, MLB.com, Rivals.com and the National Football Foundation’s Football Matters. His dedication to increasing awareness of college football integration’s true 1960s pioneers led to a 2022 First Place Award in Enterprise Writing from the Football Writers Association of America. His deeply researched article covered the 1962 Rose Bowl, when UCLA’s eight Black players and Los Angeles Times sportswriter Jim Murray stood up to segregationist Alabama coach Bear Bryant seeking a backdoor entry into the Rose Bowl in place of the traditional Big Ten entry.

Both titles are available in this limited-time bundle for $34.95. That's a discount of almost $7 off standard retail. These are great reads for any football fan or any aficionado of American history both on and off the gridiron.

Luxuriously Soft & Cooling, But Needs a Wider Opening
Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen, Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen
I really enjoy sleeping on the Beckham Hotel Collection Silk Pillowcase—it has such a silky, smooth feel that makes a noticeable difference in comfort. It feels wonderful against the skin and hair, and I especially love how it helps keep my head cool throughout the night, which leads to a restful sleep. The color choices are also wonderful and look very rich, adding a nice elegant touch to the bed. It’s also held up nicely in the wash, which is always a plus for something this delicate. That said, I’m giving it 4 stars because of the zipper opening design. You lose about 4 inches of usable space at the opening, which makes it harder than expected to insert a pillow. Unlike other zippered pillowcases I own, the ends don’t open wide enough, so I had to squeeze my pillow in—and I actually noticed the stitching starting to pull a bit because of it. A wider opening would make a big difference. Overall, it’s great to sleep on and feels luxurious, but for the price, I do think the design could be improved.

Luxuriously Soft and Packaged Like a High-End Brand
Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen, Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen
I have never owned a 100% silk pillowcase before, especially not at this price point, so I am really glad I was able to experience this one. Even the packaging felt impressive. It was packaged like a luxury brand, which made the whole experience feel special before I even used it. I already had satin pillowcases and thought they were soft, but they do not compare to this mulberry silk pillowcase at all. This pillowcase feels incredibly soft, smooth, and luxurious. I had the satin pillowcases on some of my pillows and this silk one on another, and even in the dark when I turn over during the night, I can immediately tell which pillow has this silk pillowcase on it. The difference is that noticeable. It also has ample room, so you can use a full, fluffy pillow and it will still fit nicely inside the pillowcase. I love the added luxury of the zipper because it keeps the pillow from slipping out, but the zipper is hidden and does not affect the comfort at all. Honestly, this pillowcase put my old flattened pillow to shame. Now I feel like I need to get a new pillow immediately so the pillow can match the quality of the pillowcase. It feels so gentle and smooth against my face, and I love how cool it gets when the air conditioning hits it for a while. For nighttime hot flashes, that cool feeling is such a relief. I also really appreciate that I don't always have to sleep with a satin cap if I don't want to. I have locs, so protecting my hair from lint and dryness is important, but some nights you just want to be completely comfortable without wearing anything on your head. This pillowcase gives me that option while still being gentle on my hair. It also feels better for my skin compared to cotton and other materials because it doesn't seem to soak up all the natural oils from my face. I notice a difference. The only thing I would mention is that while it gives a nice cool feeling at first, it does absorb body heat fairly quickly and can warm up. Even with that, the softness and comfort more than make up for it. I didn't know what I was missing by not having real silk sheets, and now I really crave a full silk sheet and pillowcase set. If they feel anything like this pillowcase, I know that would be some of the best sleep ever. Overall, this pillowcase is soft, luxurious, comfortable, beautifully packaged, roomy, secure with the hidden zipper, and absolutely worth trying.

How do I know if this is ....
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen, Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen
Mulberry Silk comes primarily from silkworms in China who eat white mulberry leaves, leaving a cocoon of spun silk that is used to weave fabric. With so many cheaper versions of mulberry silk, how do I know if this is the real deal? Well, I really do not know if this pillow fabric is 100% silkworm derived. It is not white so there had to be some level of dye added and that colorant is not listed. So, while I cannot confirm the fabric content, I can share how the pillow feels and functions. I have had silk and satin pillows and went back to cotton because organic cotton simply felt better on my face while sleeping. This pillow case is not like other silks, satin, or cotton. The fabric is smooth and soft - it's like sleeping on butter. I woke up this morning with less hair tangle and my face felt cuddled. I washed the pillow case before using it for the first time and the photo of this pillow case on my pillow (next to a red pillow) shows you how this pillow case looks right after being washed and fitted to a queen sized pillow. The only downside to this pillow case is extra care is needed with washing and drying. I washed the pillow case in a mesh bag in cold water and let it hang dry. It's probably not ideal fabric if you have oily skin or go to sleep with makeup because you cannot use harsh detergents to wash this pillow case and you cannot use fabric softener. I tend to wash the rest of my bedding on high heat and dry at high heat to reduce dust mites and other tiny creatures we cannot see on fabric. The zipper is good quality and easy to open and close - at this price point I would have expected a little better design to hide the metal zipper pull - added a photo to show how the metal zipper tab stops about 2 inches from the end of the pillow case with no "tuck-in" feature. The value of this pillow case seems to be fair for a high end product and it makes a nice gift. I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate buttery soft fabric. There are a ton of pillow cases that claim to be mulberry silk at a fraction of the cost of this pillow case - it's just so hard to know what is authentic and what is not so i can only speak to the fact that this pillow case feels good on my face and doesn't leave me with tangled hair. Hope the photos and the description of my experience with this pillow help you decide if this is the right pillow for you or a loved one. Here's to your comfort!

A tangible upgrade for hair care and sleep quality
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: King
I bought this a few weeks back to integrate into a more refined sleep setup, and it has easily met my expectations. It's a premium product that delivers on its promises. Material: You can immediately feel the difference in the 22 momme weight. It feels substantially thicker and more densely woven than typical "satin" substitutes, providing a smooth, glassy texture that feels truly high-end. Hair Protection: This is where it really shines. The frictionless surface has completely eliminated morning tangles and frizz. It allows hair to glide naturally, which is a massive relief if you are trying to preserve hair health or styles overnight. Comfort: It stays incredibly cool to the touch throughout the night. If you sleep hot, this naturally regulates temperature, meaning you never have to flip the pillow searching for the cold side. Appearance: The Silver Cloud color is elegant, and the fabric has a subtle, sophisticated luster. While it does arrive with some packaging creases, they smooth out with a careful press, leaving a very polished look on the bed. Fit: The King size accommodates larger, high-loft pillows perfectly without stretching. The hidden zipper is a great "zero-added-clicks" feature; it keeps the pillow locked in all night without any annoying slippage, though a slightly wider zipper opening would make insertion even easier. Quality: The stitching is tight, and the zipper operates smoothly. It holds up beautifully when hand-washed and air-dried. While $70 is an investment for a single case, the genuine 6A grade silk and OEKO-TEX certification make it a worthwhile piece of luxury.

Cool, Quiet Luxury for Your Face (and Your Hair Thanks You Too)
Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen, Color: 01 - Ivory, Size: Queen
This is one of those products where you immediately understand the price the second you touch it. First off—this definitely IS real silk, not satin, which is important to verify (esp at this price point). There are so many listings on Amazon of bonnets and pillowcases, sheets etc claiming “silk” and when you get it, it’s satin. This pillowcase is 100% mulberry silk, and you can feel it immediately. What surprised me though is that I actually have other 100% mulberry silk items (my daughter’s play silks from Sarah’s Silks), and somehow this pillowcase feels way smoother and more luxurious than those. Same material on paper, totally different experience in real life. From what I can tell, it’s thicker and more tightly woven, which gives it that extra silky, almost glassy feel. It’s buttery smooth, lightweight, and has that cool-to-the-touch finish that’s honestly a dream in the Phoenix, AZ heat, where it’s already 105 in March. Getting into bed feels like flipping your pillow to the cold side… every time. 🧊 It fits a standard queen pillow perfectly (mine’s a thicker foam pillow and slid right in with zero struggle), and the hidden zipper is secure without being annoying. No bunching, no slipping off mid-sleep—just stays put. And it’s not just nice—it’s doing something. My hair definitely wakes up less chaotic, and it feels gentler on my skin overall. One of those quiet upgrades you don’t think about much… until you do. The ivory color is soft and clean-looking, very effortless luxury, and I like that there are other color options if you want to switch up the vibe. Yes, $60 for a pillowcase sounds a little wild—but this actually feels like a $60 pillowcase. Thick, high-quality, and genuinely luxurious, not pretending to be. If you’ve been on the fence, this is one of those small changes that makes your whole sleep setup feel elevated.
