About the Artist
John Butler Yeats (1839–1922) had a gift that eluded many of his contemporaries — he painted people as they actually were. No flattery, no performance, no idealization. In an era when portrait painters were expected to flatter their subjects, Yeats painted conviction, intelligence and character.
