It is made by hand from natural bamboo by Takayama artisans of the long-established Chikumeido workshop.
A futaoki — the rest on which the kettle lid or the ladle is set during the tea ceremony. Sold as a matched pair (issō). This piece is described by the Japanese source as bearing the stylized signature (kaō) of Kobori Takugen, a priest of the Kohōan sub-temple of Daitoku-ji (大徳寺) in Kyoto. As an individually made and signed or inscribed piece, slight natural variation in the bamboo and in the inscription or signature is inherent and part of its character.
Care: rinse in water and wipe dry after use; avoid detergent, dishwashers and prolonged soaking, and let the bamboo dry fully to prevent splitting or mold.
