More: Many varieties of Barrenwort have been in cultivation for over 150 years. A tried and true perennial for a shady border. Will gradually increase into a nicely size clump via rhizome. The foliage looks great all summer and provides protection for numerous small creatures who appreciate a cool, moist understory, such as salamanders. The attractive, heart-shaped leaves add a different texture to the woodland border. Works well with many Carex species and certain ferns as well as White Woodland Aster (one simple combination of many!). Clumps can be divided in late summer. I have seen early season bees feeding on the flowers. The delicate sprays of flowers are lovely in small bouquets. Epimediums are deer and rabbit resistant.
