During the Philippine-American War of 1899-1902, the United States gained control of the Philippine Islands after its victory in the Spanish-American War. In an effort to assist in the reconstruction of the Filipino economy, President Theodore Roosevelt requested the San Francisco Mint to produce silver Pesos that could be exchanged for American currency. These coins, struck from 1903-1912, were compatible with the old Spanish issues and were exchanged at a rate of two Philippines pesos for one American dollar.
