Vaughn, the uptight jock, was settling for me as his publicist and I resented the implication that I wasn’t as good as my sisters.

I didn’t know what he had against me, but I planned to do the best damn job I could and then hightail it out of his small town. Because despite it all, he was just the kind of macho ladies’ man who could seduce my body and wreak havoc with my heart. But considering he was pushing me away as hard as I was running, we ought to survive our time together just fine.

Now, outside my apartment building, I could sense the star football player staring as he strode around the back of the vehicle to help with my bags. Though it was early summer and I expected to be hot, the sizzling spike in my body temperature had nothing to do with the weather and everything to do with the man staring at me from behind his dark lenses.

He took one look at the dog travel bag hanging from my shoulder and slid his glasses down on his nose. “No fucking way.”

I grit my teeth. “I am not leaving him behind.”

“You’re only going to be gone a few days. Isn’t there a neighbor who can take it?” he asked, looking pained at the thought of bringing my pet along.

“Not it. He. And he’s still skittish from being on death row. He needs the certainty of knowing I’m not going to abandon him.” And since I knew exactly what that fear felt like, there was no room for compromise.

Vaughn set his jaw and opened the back door of the truck. He hefted my large suitcase, laptop, and duffel, which held my toiletries, into the trunk. That was when his gaze fell onto the rabbit’s cage.

“Oh, for the love of—” He bit back a curse. “Why don’t you just live on a farm?”

“What do you have against animals?”

Vaughn raised his gaze heavenward and drew an even breath. “I have nothing against them.”

“Do you have a pet?” I asked, standing up for myself and arguing right back.

“No pets. Not since I was ten.”

I sniffed. “It was probably a dog. A big old nasty mutt,” I muttered. “I’ll bet you had matching personalities.”

“Actually, it was a fish.”

Shaking my head, I tried to reason with him. “Look. Many hotels allow pets so it shouldn’t be hard to keep these guys out of your way.”

“Hotel?” He let out a laugh.

“Motel, then.”

He shook his head.

“Bed and breakfast?” I asked hopefully.

“Honey, would I be building a lodge if the town didn’t have the need?”

I shrugged. “I just got this assignment, remember? I’m not yet up to speed. But I will be.” I patted the laptop he’d just placed on top of my large suitcase at the same time his hand came to rest on the computer. “So where am I staying?”

He stretched his neck from side to side, looking like he was in pain. “At my place.”

And now I knew why. The two of us under one roof? I raised my eyebrows at him.

“Trust me, it’s not a come-on,” he said, before I could reply.

“Are you sure about that?” I asked. I couldn’t help but push him when he was being rude … and yet sexy at the same time.

He met my gaze, jaw tight, before he replied. “What my body wants and what I know is right for me are two different things.”

Ouch. “No sense sugarcoating it,” I muttered, hurt by his callous words.

Infinite Stars, Gorgeous Book For Kids
Format: Kindle
Frostfire is a cozy whimsical book that showcases the pure imagination and creativity of a child, something that is often lost in our world of technology. Two sisters, Celeste and Miriam, go for a snowy winter walk and Miriam shares all of her knowledge about snow dragons. This topic alone will have your child buzzing with questions and theories of their own. Celeste is such a positive big sister, never minimizing her little sister’s imagination or doubting her facts of snow dragons. I really enjoyed the sisterly bond throughout this book and the patience of siblings shown. The illustrations in this book are stunningly beautiful me bring another whimsical element to the story. From the way the light hits the snow or fades in from the side of the page, to the frost layers on the greenhouse and the silvery snow bushes. Obviously there was a lot of time spent in the illustrations with great attention to detail, which really brings this book to life. I would purchase this book again and again, it would be the perfect Christmas gift for a child.

Beautiful Winter Fantasy
Format: Hardcover
I have enjoyed Elly Mackay's illustrations in other books, so when I saw that she was the author and illustrator of a new book, I had to request it from Net Galley. It's a wonderful treat made of words, art, and imagination. The story opens with two sisters, walking in a winter landscape. The older sister is telling the younger about the snow dragon, hoping to scare her a little, I think. But the younger sister is not willing to be cowed and sets off to explore. What will she find in the snowy landscape? This is a great book for snuggling or for a storytime gathering. I love winter and Elly MacKay has captured the beauty and wonder of it in Frostfire.

A must buy for the littles this winter.
Format: Kindle
Frostfire is a must buy for the littles this winter. I read through it once myself and absolutely loved the story and especially the illustrations. A very classic, winter whimsy. The second time I read Frostfire was with my 3 and 5 year olds. They also enjoyed it and had quite the debate over whether the snow dragon would be real. The 3 year old won! Looking forward to this book's release and coming across some frostfire in the real world this winter. Thanks to Penguin Random House Canada, Tundra Books and NetGalley for the eARC!

atmospheric illustrations and a story about sharing imagination
Format: Hardcover
I received this book as part of the LibraryThing EarlyReviewer program. The illustrations are photographs of collage, with some digital editing to add snow effects. It's a bit of an atmospheric "kids go for a walk in the snow" book, a la The Snowy Day, but for older kids. I liked how there was a subtle background story about children trying to navigate having slightly conflicting imaginative stories. It can be a challenge for a kid to learn how to do this when playing with others. The illustrations of the dragon especially were a wonderful surprise. My 8 year old loved the book and is happy that we get to keep it.
