José Adelino Barcelo de Carvalho was born in Kipiri in 1953. When he was still a child, his family moved to a district in the north of the city of Luanda. Formerly a fortress built in 1576, the capital of Angola was still a Portuguese colony at the time. In his youth, before José changed his colonial name to the more Angolan Bonga Kuenda, he lived in the city's poorer quarters, called musseques - meaning "built with sand" in Kimbundu, one of the country's main languages. In the mid Fifties, Africa was beginning to rebel against colonial domination. Seventy years after the Berlin Conference, where the European powers divided up the continent between them, liberation movements were gathering momentum. Both peaceful negotiations and armed resistance heralded the end of colonization and the independence of different nations that followed in the next decade. Under the dictator Salazar, Portugal was one of the more intractable colonial powers. It decided to try and crush the green shoots of independence in Angola, where there were frequent rural revolts - especially in the northern bush. In the musseques surrounding Luanda, there was much talk of armed struggle against the colonial troops. A climate of general unrest reigned in Ilha de Cabo, Barrio Operario and Sambizanga, where the Caribbean filmmaker Sara Maldoror shot one of the finest records of decolonization ever made. In the white districts, European administrators went about their everyday business with a few asimilados - privileged Angolans who had embraced the culture, language and religion of the colonists. But in the suburbs, poets, novelists and artists led the resistance movement. They studied the history of their country and were inspired by stories of their ancestor N'Gola Kiluanje, King of N'Dongo, who fought the Portuguese army for many years back in the sixteenth century.

Great mineral sunscreen that actually works
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Set name: Tube - 5 oz.
Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral SPF 50 has become my daily go-to. It goes on smooth, doesn’t leave a weird white cast like some mineral sunscreens, and gives solid protection. I like that it’s 100% mineral with no harsh chemicals and has organic aloe vera in it, so my skin feels hydrated instead of dried out. No greasy feeling, no strong scent, and it holds up well even when I sweat a bit. Been using it for a few weeks now and it performs exactly how I want. Small bottle but a little goes a long way. Definitely recommend if you want a simple, effective mineral option.

Fabulous product! Made my skin feel soft!
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Set name: Tube - 5 oz.
This product goes on smooth and a little goes a long way. I used it today for the first time and was very pleased that it held up to my sweating in the heat doing farm work! It doesn’t bother my very sensitive skin, in fact it is quite soothing. A little goes a long way. With about a quarter size amount I was able to do both arms and my face. I was outside for several hours and didn’t burn like I usually do. It is basically unscented which is nice and isn’t sticky.

Works well and neutral scent. Has white cast.
Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Set name: Tube - 3 oz.
Not a bad sunscreen. I wore it yesterday at a water park, reapplied every 1-2 hours, and didn’t get burned. Works well as a sunscreen and has a very neutral scent, which I appreciate a lot. However, like most mineral sunscreens it feels a bit heavy and definitely has a white cast. I’m pretty pale and still had a hard time getting it to blend in. It’s priced well, available at many super markets, offers good protection, and the neutral scent means I will continue using it (I stopped using some other sunblocks because of the scent alone). Just know it feels heavy and has a white cast.

Favorite Mineral Sunscreen
Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Set name: Tube - 5 oz.
This is my go to mineral sunscreen. It's very effective at protecting your skin from the harsh UV rays. It great to use for any water based activities, since it stays on your skin regardless of how wet it gets. I'm also able to use it under my eyes without it irritating them. Though it does leave behind a white cast after applying, but I personally don't mind it.

My favorite mineral sunscreen for Hawaii
Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Set name: Tube - 3 oz.
My favorite mineral sunscreen for Hawaii. I just got back from a week in Maui. I took 3 different brands of mineral sunscreen. For Maui it has to say mineral to be allowed. Of the 3 the Blue Lizard was our favorite. It went on white but rubbed in the quickest. We applied in our room before going out for several hours and never got a burn the entire week. I only reapplied once on a hike. Would recommend Blue Lizard!
