Air America Tri-Blend T-ShirtBefore they were the "Cocaine Import Agency" the CIA was the heroin delivery service, better known as Air America. (Allegedly, of course. Wink wink.) You may have seen the 1990 movie with Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. movie about these incredibly skilled pilots and the Golden Triangle drug trade. While it was a fictional account, the movie was pretty open about narcotics trafficking as were former pilots and Laotian operators involved in the 1970s.

Before they were the "Cocaine Import Agency" the CIA was the heroin delivery service, better known as Air America. (Allegedly, of course. Wink wink.) You may have seen the 1990 movie with Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. movie about these incredibly skilled pilots and the Golden Triangle drug trade. While it was a fictional account, the movie was pretty open about narcotics trafficking - as were former pilots and Laotian operators involved in the 1970s. But that story is only one controversial component of the fascinating story of Air America.

The public owner and cutout for Air America was the Civil Air Transport (CAT) run by "old Leatherface" Claire Lee Chennault of Fighting Tigers fame. CAT was a Taiwan-based airline acquired by the CIA in the 1950s that originally ran similar covert operations helping Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist forces against Mao's communist forces on the mainland. CAT provided legal cover for the CIA's involvement with Air America, allowing the agency to operate the airline without arousing suspicion, along with complete plausible deniability if anything went sideways. The use of front companies like CAT is standard tradecraft for the CIA, as it allows the agency to carry out covert operations without drawing attention to its involvement. Today the CIA even runs In-Q-Tel, a venture capital firm that funds an incredible list of companies in data, sensors, security, surveillance tech, video, nanotech, energy, and even biotech.

Running drugs wasn't Air America's mission, however. It was more a side hustle out of necessity. Air America really was about helping fight commies in Asia by shipping "Anything, Anytime, Anywhere - Professionally." Guns, food, people, ordinance, or smack. It didn't matter as long as it helped hit Ho Chi Mihn where it counts.

After the war, both Air America pilots and the Loasian Hmong they worked with scattered after the company closed its doors in 1976. Many moved to the Midwest to places like Wisconsin and Minnesota with the Hmong community that worked with the CIA in Laos being transplanted mostly here in Minnesota. Their kids ended up being my friends growing up. The airmen my neighbors.

Here are some of the operations Air America was involved with:

1. The evacuation of Saigon: In 1975, as the Vietnam War was coming to a close, Air America played a critical role in evacuating American civilians and military personnel from Saigon. Air America pilots flew numerous flights in and out of the city, often under heavy fire, and were credited with helping to save thousands of lives.

2. The "Ravens" of Laos: In the early 1960s, Air America pilots were recruited to fly covert missions in support of the CIA's secret war in Laos. These pilots, known as the "Ravens," flew small, single-engine planes to transport troops, supplies, and weapons to remote areas of the country. They often flew at low altitudes and under extreme weather conditions and were frequently shot at by enemy forces.

3. The rescue of downed pilots: Air America also played a critical role in rescuing American pilots who were shot down over enemy territory during the Vietnam War. In some cases, Air America pilots would fly into hostile territory to retrieve the downed pilots, risking their own lives in the process. Pretty badass stuff.

This tri-blend tee is unique and the only of its kind. It features the Air America winged shield logo embroidered on the front left breast, and on the back, the logo is printed with the company's unofficial motto, "We Deliver the Goods". The tri-blend fabric creates a vintage, fitted look. And extreme durability makes this t-shirt withstand repeated washings and still remain super comfortable.

Easy and simple: Exact Step-by-Step Guide to Reloading Your Balance
Reload type: One Time Reload
I found reloading my Amazon gift card balance much easier than expected. The process was simple and took about 5 minutes at most. Here are the exact steps to do it: Login: In the Amazon app or on Amazon.com, log in to your account. Menu: Tap the 3 lines on the bottom right corner of your screen (next to Rufus, Amazon's AI). Find Category: In the section highlighted "Shop by category," tap on Gifting & Registry (3rd option down in that section) and a drop-down menu will appear. Select Gift Cards: On the drop-down menu, tap Gift Cards (first option). Choose Your Action: "The Gift Card Shop" will appear. There you will have three options: "Redeem a gift card," "View your balance," and "Reload." Start Reload: To add funds, tap Reload. Select Type: Scroll down to "Add funds directly to your Amazon Gift Card balance" and tap which reload type you want (one-time, low balance auto-reload, or scheduled auto-reload). Enter Amount: Choose your reload amount. The default is $25, but you can type in your own amount as well (the minimum amount is $5.00). Finish: Tap the orange "Buy Now" tab. ***I used the Amazon app using the u i OneUI version 8.0 these Amazon app on Android version 16 (Baklava) on a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. Others may have a slight variation of the menu setup on the Amazon app.***

Easy way to add balance
Reload type: One Time Reload
Reloading my Amazon gift card balance has been easy and convenient. I like using it when I want to keep a little money set aside for Amazon orders or make checkout quicker without thinking about which card I want to use. The process is straightforward, the balance shows up fast, and it has been reliable every time I have used it. It is also helpful for budgeting because I can add a set amount and then use that balance for regular purchases. Nothing complicated about it, which is exactly why I like it.

Great for keeping bank statements clean but random security delays are frustrating
Reload type: One Time Reload
I use the balance reload tool to manage my monthly budget and easily hit credit card sign-up bonuses. It keeps my bank statements totally clean by grouping dozens of tiny e-book and movie rental charges into one single transaction. Most of the time the whole process works flawlessly and the money shows up in my account within five minutes. It is honestly the easiest way to put a hard limit on my family's everyday online shopping. You just need to watch out for a few annoying system quirks when you load larger amounts of money. Even though it usually works instantly the automated security filter sometimes flags big reloads and freezes the transaction for hours. This random delay is incredibly frustrating if you are trying to add cash fast to catch a lightning deal before it expires. You also have to remember that this balance is strictly non-refundable and cannot be used to buy other gift cards. Overall this is still a great method for organizing online spending and maximizing your cash-back credit card rewards. It totally fixed how I track household purchases but you definitely have to tolerate the occasional processing delays. My best advice is to load your account a day or two before you actually need to buy a big-ticket item. It works perfectly as a budgeting tool as long as you know the rules and plan for the random security hold.

Great for Budgeting – Instant Balance and Easy to Use
Reload type: One Time Reload
I use Amazon’s gift card reload feature to plan my spending. It’s perfect when I know I want to make a purchase but prefer to set the funds aside first. I love that it’s immediate—no worries about pending charges or accidental spending from my card. It gives me peace of mind knowing that when I’m ready to buy, the balance is just sitting there, waiting. Pros: easy to use, instant balance update, helps with budgeting and avoiding overspending Cons: funds are locked into Amazon once reloaded, doesn’t count toward certain account requirements like review eligibility Overall, it’s a convenient and reliable way to manage spending on Amazon, especially if you like having control over your purchases.
