Wine Region: Burgundy - France

Grape: Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes: A bright garnet robe of good intensity. Living up to expectations, the nose is powerful and racy. Noble vegetal notes, crushed leaves reminiscent of brown tobacco, delicate flowers, macerated fruits and fine spices are the main components of a bouquet of great complexity. When aerated, it takes on nuances of cherries in brandy and apricot kernel. The palate is young, lively and fresh, rooted in a ‘mineral’ texture that gives it a certain verticality. A slight astringency, which is normal at this stage, paired with a ‘calcareous’ nervous note, counterbalances a juicy side, reminiscent of cherry, then blood orange. Signs of maturation are still present, and patience is required as it blends into the body. Both wisdom and energy are noticeable in a round and tart finish; these are qualities typical of the appellation and attest to the nobility of this great Pinot cuvée!

About the Winery:
The Gelin family has been managing this esteemed 13-hectare estate since 1925. Under the stewardship of Pierre-Emmanuel Gelin since 2000, the vineyards have transitioned to organic farming. With vineyards in Fixin and Gevrey Chambertin, including the monopoles of Fixin 1er Cru Clos Napoléon and Gevrey Chambertin Clos Meixvelle, the wines showcase generous flavours and a rustic profile with strong tannins. The estate follows manual harvest practices, employs maceration and fermentation techniques, and ages the wines in oak barrels for 20 to 24 months before release.

Thorough But Easily Read Historical Account
Format: Paperback
I bought this book thinking it would be an account of civilian life in the U.S. during WWII. But I was surprised to see that it focused almost exclusively on the military campaigns and the decisions behind them. There was sporadic mention of life on the homefront, but mostly the book is a book about the war. Which is not a criticism. Kennedy deftly and thoroughly takes us through the war, outlines for us the challenges and opportunities and how the leaders of the affected nations developed their strategies. In addtion to the fine details of history, Kennedy writes in such a fashion that this book will probably appeal to the scholar and the layman with equal strength. As someone long in the tooth, I knew most of the history of WWII, but if you are younger and want a comprehensive, well-written history an epic period in world history, you could do a lot worse than read this compelling book.

Scholarly and Readable, Too
Format: Paperback
I read the first volume in this series (about the Great Depression), and now I'm in the midst of this one. Kennedy's very-lucid prose keeps the reader moving along, and of course, the sweep of the story he's telling is nearly-irresistible. But in lamer hands, the prose might well have bogged down in turgidity--not so in this case!
