However, while the development of more capable armoured vehicles proceeded at a rapid pace in the European theatre, the Japanese were somewhat slow to recognise how far their tanks and anti-tank guns were falling behind.

The Japanese believed the newer 47mm gun (a similar calibre of gun used by the Soviets at Nomonhan) would be effective against any tanks supplied to the Chinese and the expected light tanks which would be fielded by the Allies in any Pacific War.
