JOYCE, James. Ulysses. Paris: Shakespeare and Company. 1922.

4to. Original blue wrappers, titles to cover in white; pp. 732, uncut; spine, hinges and extremities expertly repaired; a very good copy, housed in a custom quarter brown calf over blue cloth book form box, lettered in gilt to the spine; early bookplate ‘Ex Libris Yester House’ to front free endpaper (see below).

First edition, number 442 of 750 copies on handmade paper numbered 251 to 1,000; the copy sold to the poet E. E. Cummings according to Sylvia Beach’s records.

Ulysses is not a great novel in the sense of A la recherché du temps perdu. The characters do not develop. It has no consistent tragic grandeur and bogs down in several stylistic exercises which have nothing to do with the novel proper; yet the early Dedalus section, the middle parts of Bloom and the Nightown orgy and Molly’s final reverie stand out like Gaudi’s unfinished cathedral. The whole plan fails through Joyce’s intellectual preference for language rather than people – yet somehow it does achieve greatness like a ruined temple soaring from a jungle – and should be judged perhaps as a poem, a festival of the imagination’ (Connolly, 100 Key Books of the Modern Movement).

Cyril Connolly’s judgement stands as a fair summation of this astonishing novel – discursive, baffling, funny, moving, a unique mingling of highbrow allusion and quotidian detail. It is as dazzling a display of stylistic virtuosity as has ever been attempted in prose, to the extent that it might not even be prose any more, and it is all in the service of a narrative that does nothing more than illuminate one day in the life of an ordinary man. It is a celebration of the individual that expresses the deep richness of human existence by drawing the parallels between the feats of classical heroes and the deeds of everyday life.

It was also, famously, judged to be so obscene after excerpts of the work in progress were published in the American journal The Little Review between 1918 and 1920 that no mainstream publisher would touch it. Indeed, British printers were forbidden from printing it. It would take Sylvia Beach, the visionary owner of Shakespeare and Company in Paris, to publish this, the first edition in book form, in a strictly limited run on Joyee’s fortieth birthday on 2 February 1922. The first UK edition, published by The Egoist Press in the October of the same year, had to use Beach’s printer in Dijon, Darantiere, and her plates to obviate the legal restrictions.

The very existence of this work in print, then, is due to the perseverance and commitment of Sylvia Beach. Beach met Joyce at a tea party in 1920 and got to know him and his work after he joined her lending library; from such low-key beginnings quickly grew a creative partnership that would shape literary history. Shakespeare and Company gained considerable fame from the publication of Ulysses but actually lost financially after Joyce signed with another publisher and left Beach in debt caused by bankrolling the printing and distribution of his masterpiece, the first book she had ever published. Nevertheless, she seems never to have seriously regretted her part in the production of this cultural behemoth, a book for which T. S. Eliot wrote in awestruck tones: ‘I hold Ulysses to be the most important expression which the present age has found; it is a book to which we are all indebted, and from which none of us can escape’.

Provenance: According to Sylvia Beach’s records, copy number 442 was sold to the poet E. E. Cummings in February 1922. The copy has an alternative provenance: Mary Mowbray-Clarke, proprietor of The Sunwise Turn bookshop in New York City, records copy no. 442 arriving at her shop in January 1923. The Yester House of the elegant bookplate is located in Mobile, Alabama and is now called Carolina Hall. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We are not sure who was living there in 1922 but in 1955 a William Clay Perdue and his wife Martha took over the property.

Great product
I really like this sunscreen! It feels lightweight, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy. The SPF 55 gives great protection, and it works well for everyday use. Great value for the price!

Delivers what it promises
I’m a fair skinned person who burns and freckles easily and in my 40’s. I also love being outside. I have worn spf on my face (and usually my hands) basically every day since I was 13 and because of that people always say I don’t look my age. Back then, only a 4 or 8 was available in face moisturizers, but I have always worn the highest that is recommended and usually face moisturizers are behind in meeting the recommendations so I have usually worn a full on sunscreen under my makeup. As the recommendations get higher it has been harder to find something that doesn’t look pasty, smell bad or interfere with makeup. I was using Eucerin spf 30 and Cera Ve spf 30 but I have wanted to increase spf to 50 because that is what is recommended now. I tried the Cera Ve spf 50 and was disappointed by how tacky it is and pasty it looks. I don’t even like wearing it alone to the beach because it’s so chalky white and sticky. Neutrogena healthy defense is alright but it has a scent and some chemicals that are not so good. It also is a pretty small bottle (1.7 oz) when you use it everyday on face and hands. But THIS product has blown me away with its affordability and quality. It IS sheer. Easily blends in and disappears quickly into skin. It’s completely odorless. It’s not tacky or greasy—you feel moisturized but not sticky. It performs under foundation even better than the Cera Ve 30. Now, this doesn’t have the extra ceramides and vitamins that does so I’ll still be using that when I feel extra dry like in winter, or I might mix the two moisturizers, but this Solimo reef safe sunscreen will definitely be my daily face and hand sunscreen in the spring, summer and early fall. These are the days I go straight from work to the garden or the beach. I can quickly reapply over my makeup before I leave the house again feel fully protected while I’m out.

I believe equal to name brand rhyming with NitroGina
I believe it is equal to the name brand mentioned on the front side of the tube. It is 55 SPF Sun Protection Factor so it offers strong UV A and UV B protection which are the 2 ranges of sun rays that do the skin damage and burning. It is an easily absorbed lotion that when rubbed goes into the skin and is not visible. It feels good after being rubbed in in that it feels dry and not overly greasy or with no shine and sheen. If you put on a shirt over your skin with lotion it will appear on the inside of a dark shirt but it will wash out right away when that shirt is washed. It is a good product and offers burn protection to me in some clear-sky strong sun uses. Reapply after entering the pool or after an hour (all sunscreen labels say reapply after 80 minutes which I believe is per recommendations of the federal FDA or some medical studies). I reapply often and I still get tanned but I do not want to burn.

Super impressed by this!
Love this sunscreen and will be reordering it. It’s sheer, light, invisible, gives me the protection I need for my middle aged skin and I can swear my complexion has gotten better since I started using it. I’m super impressed how it’s comparable to more expensive brands in quality without the high price tag. It’s made me start looking into other skin products I can purchase from the Amazon brand.

How is this SO good?
I'm a sunscreen enthusiast. I wear sunscreen every day, and I know how hard it is to find one that is actually pleasant to use. It goes on like a white paste but it quickly blends in to the skin and becomes invisible. There is NO white cast after you rub it in. The initial white color makes it really easy to see where you have applied it. The lotion is very moisturizing but it's also fairly lightweight feeling, and isn't greasy. My skin is usually on the dry side. The smell is nice and neutral, some people might say that it has a bit of a "sunscreen" smell. But the smell is pretty faint and it doesn't linger. I find it to be pleasant, personally. Additionally, I have used this in the water and I find it to offer excellent water resistance even though it doesn't form a heavy-feeling layer on the skin. This is particularly impressive to me. This sunscreen will definitely be a go-to for beach days. It's great for face and body! The one caveat is that it tastes terrible if you get it in your mouth. So I definitely do not recommend eating it, lol. You might have this issue if you're particularly sweaty and the sweat drips down your face. In my experience many sunscreens do this, so I don't consider it to be a big deal. I'd recommend this for anyone looking for cost-effective and lightweight sun protection. It's great on face and body.
