There were two iterations of the Welch Miners, a minor league baseball team from Welch, West Virginia. The first played in the Mountain State League from 1937–1942, reaching the playoffs every year but never winning a title, though they made the finals in 1941. After World War II, the Miners reformed in 1946 as part of the Appalachian League, eventually winning back-to-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 before financial issues led to their relocation to Marion, Virginia in 1955.

Before affiliated baseball arrived, local coal miners formed a team called the Welch Senators, whose success led to the construction of Blakely Field, later home to both Miners teams. While the Miners never produced a Hall of Fame player, several alumni reached the majors, including 1951 Miner Dave Bristol, who managed four MLB teams and helped shape the early “Big Red Machine” Reds. Former big leaguer Max Butcher also pitched for the Miners in 1946 after a 10-year MLB career. Today, the nearest pro baseball to Welch is in Bluefield, West Virginia, 33 miles away.
