Discover the profound narratives within 'Refuge New Zealand', a compelling paperback by Ann Beaglehole, published by Otago University Press. This informative book, with dimensions of 150 x 230 mm and 263 pages, delves into the intricate history of New Zealand's response to refugees and asylum seekers. Since 1840, New Zealand has been a sanctuary for countless individuals fleeing persecution, war, and oppression due to their ethnicity, religion, or political beliefs.

In this insightful examination, you'll explore the social dynamics shaping New Zealand's refugee policies over time, scrutinizing who has been welcomed and who has been excluded. The author takes a critical look at the motivations behind selecting refugee settlers, emphasizing themes such as the preference for groups that align with the cultural and societal fabric of the country. Furthermore, 'Refuge New Zealand' highlights the historical plight of the Maori, who faced similar displacements throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries due to war and land confiscations.

As you read, you'll grapple with the balance between humanitarian responsibilities and national interests, enriching your understanding of the ongoing challenges and changes in refugee immigration policies. This book is perfect for educators, students, and anyone interested in humanitarian issues and New Zealand's complex social history.

Unlike people who choose to migrate in search of new opportunities, refugees are compelled to leave their homeland. Typically, they are escaping war and persecution because of their ethnicity, their religion or their political beliefs. Since 1840, New Zealand has given refuge to thousands of people from Europe, South America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Refuge New Zealand examines New Zealand's response to refugees and asylum seekers in an historical context. Which groups and categories have been chosen, and why? Who has been kept out and why? How has public policy governing refugee immigration changed over time?

Aspects of New Zealand's response to refugees and asylum seekers considered in the book include: the careful selection of refugee settlers to ensure they will 'fit in'; the preference for 'people like us' and the exclusion of so-called 'race aliens'; the desire for children, especially orphans; responses to the increasing diversity of refugee intakes; the balance between humanitarian, economic and political considerations; and the refugee-like situation of Maori.

As the book also shows, refugees and asylum seekers from overseas have not been the country's only refugees. War, land confiscations and European settlement had made refugees of Maori in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, with displacement and land loss contributing to subsequent Maori social and economic deprivation.

The best shoe brand I have found for toddlers! Exceptional quality
Size: 12 Little Kid, Color: Black/Beige
I have ordered a handful of shoes from Mini Melissa in the past, so I knew to size up. I typically order 1 to 3 sizes larger than what my daughter currently wears depending on the season and type of shoe. For this shoe, I ordered about 3 sizes up, so that she will be able to wear them next spring / summer and I am glad I did. They are a little large on her now, but I know we will get a lot of use out of them next summer playing in the yard, pool and beach! As with all Mini Melissa shoes, the first thing I do when I open the box is smell them - their shoes have the most pleasant scent! They make the best jelly-like quality shoes; they are absolutely worth the price for the quality and style you receive. They hold up very well - they are the only shoes that she outgrows before the shoe breaks down or looks unwearable. My daughter has worn many of their styles, and has never gotten a blister or complained about the comfort. They are supportive, but flexible and even as young as she is, she gets so excited for cute shoes! I ordered the beige and black for something neutral we can wear with many different outfits and that won't show dirt on the sole. The color is exactly as pictured. I really appreciate that top straps are functional and adjustable. She has a bit of a wider foot, so this allows us to get even more use out of them. I am very glad I ordered these and will continue to tell my friends about what I find to be the best shoe brand for toddlers and kids!

SMELL is not so great. A bit pricey for kid shoes.
These are very cute and sparkly, just as a jelly should be. They are true to size and easy to learn how to buckle. I'm glad it's not velcro buckles as those easily fall apart. These jellies will definitely last. I assume that's why this brand 'mini melissa' is a bit more pricey, but 89 dollars for kid shoes they will grow out of in a year?! I have seen others not so expensive of the same brand. Not sure why these are so high. I don't think it's worth the money unless they're taken down a notch. They SMELL, which others love but I cannot stand the smell. Honestly like a park restroom air freshener or urinal cake. It stunk up the whole garage. And they are purposefully stored outside or in the garage for that reason. Not allowed in the house. It's been a month and they still are so strongly smelly. I wish there was a 'non scented' if that's possible. A good brand, but the smell is awful and the price isn't as fair for kid shoes.
