My City
My City is both a legacy and non legacy game from prolific designer Reiner Knizia. It takes the polyomino gameplay made popular in Patchwork, Isle of Cats and Barenpark and adds a legacy campaign to it.
The basic gameplay is played on the back of the player boards and can be used after the 24 episodes are played. It is a fairly simple affair. Each player has the same set of building tiles in three different colours. There is a card in the deck for each of these buildings which is shuffled and placed facedown. Each round is a card is drawn and each player must place the shown building on their player board.
There are various rules about placement and after your first building is placed you must place next to existing buildings on your board. Printed on the board are trees and rocks both can be covered up but trees will get you points for still being on display and rocks give negative points if they can still be seen. You start the game with 10 points and can always choose to lose a point to not place a building.
At the end of the game you will get points for the buildings of the same colour in your biggest group of that colour and trees. You will lose points for rocks and empty green spaces on the board.
What elevates this above other games of type is the 24 game legacy style campaign. Every three games you will open an envelope containing new rules, stickers and possibly new cards and buildings. These build on the basic rules and add new scoring complications. Stickers are used to balance the game and stop a run away leader situation. The loser of each episode will often get a sticker that aids scoring while the winner will get one that makes it harder to win.
There is a tactical excitement to opening envelopes and the rules added are gentle and challenging and although you add stickers to the board, having the other side to play at the end is great. Highly recommended for those new to legacy games and old hands.
