Discover the captivating narrative of How the New World Became Old, an insightful exploration of America's geological and historical transformation. This engaging book by Caroline Winterer uncovers how the concept of deep time revolutionized our understanding of the United States' past. Through vivid storytelling, readers will journey from fossil-rich landscapes that once vibrated with the footsteps of T. rex and Brontosaurus to the rich heritage of America's ancient ecosystems.

Set against the backdrop of the nineteenth century, this work illustrates the shock and awe Americans experienced upon learning their land was once home to saber-toothed cats, woolly mammoths, and sprawling subtropical forests. Winterer meticulously illustrates how naturalists, explorers, and citizens unearthed a history that defies the simplistic narrative of the 'New World'.

By combining archival research with culturally significant landmarks—from Yosemite's glaciers to Alabama's slave plantations—Winterer demonstrates how deep time has reshaped American identity. This book is not only a scholarly examination of our country’s origins but also a meditation on the intersection of geology, history, and personal identity.

Perfect for history buffs and casual readers alike, How the New World Became Old is an essential read for anyone interested in the profound geological narrative that sculpts America’s landscape. Embrace the past and witness the evolution of a nation.

Very exciting story
Format: Paperback
Paradise is where my parents retired and are buried. The house they lived in burned down in the fire after 34 years of wonderful memories with my husband and our 3 children. We are just so grateful that my parents died before the fire, my dad being the last in 2016 at over 100 years old. Our youngest son has autism and trouble reading so this was the perfect book to have him read to me. It’s just at his reading level and was a very exciting story. We appreciate all of the facts about the fire the author put in the last pages of this book, too.

Fast Pace Scary Read
Format: Kindle
A short read that grabs your heart strings from the beginning and doesn't stop until the very end. You can feel the terror, the fear, the fire and smell the smoke as the kids run for their lives. You cheer the kids on scared for them and the pets. My heart racing, tears forming, worry working its way in, do they make it? Read this book to find out. Kudos to the authors for excellent writing. A book all should read and discuss with their families!!!

Grabs Your Attention from the Start
Format: Paperback
Well written and definitely grabs and keeps your attention. I read it in one sitting. So did my mom and sister. Just a warning, this book did trigger some anxiety for me because of the fire. It uses actual street names and timeframes. We love to read the “I Survived” series to my son and this one was better in my opinion but I have ties to Paradise.
