With the Revolutionary War over, the newly created Federal government decided to assume the war debts of the individual states. In 1791 Congress placed an excise tax on whiskey to pay the debt. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton came up with the idea. Farmers west of the Allegheny Mountains - immediately took the tax as a personal assault.

Whiskey was not only the drink of choice amongst the inhabitants of
the West, but it served, as one wit put it, like money, and medicine all in one as the Continental paper money was rarely honored. Many western distillers did not pay the excise, and if arrested had to make expensive trips to Philadelphia for trial. But the Whiskey tax was just part of growing unrest in the west, culminating in rebellion.

The rebellion had a force of 7000 armed militia troops. To restore order to the ensuing “Whiskey Rebellion”, Washington sent the Continental Army. The 13,000 federal troops sent to the western Pennsylvania area were the first test of the power of the new government.

Even before any shots were fired or organized militias marched, Western Pensyvanians began making an assortment of protest or "rebel flags." One popular, but likely historically spurious "Whiskey Rebellion Flag" sold at flag stores contains the device of an eagle holding a ribbon in its beak and thirteen six-pointed stars scattered about a blue field. Historians disagree on whether it was ever actually flown as no contemporary accounts ever mention this flag and its symbolism is wrong as a rebellion flag. Some even believe this flag was more likely a standard from Federal troops left behind after the insurrection as regimental standards were often blue fields.

Accounts are available of various other flags such as this 6 rebel stripe flag, with scripted versions stating "An Equal Tax, and No Excise." After the tax collector's plantation farm was burned down the rebel flags started to get more aggressive, stating "Equal Taxation and no Excise – No Asylum for Traitors and Cowards."

Others stated "Liberty or Death," or "liberty and Equality, " or even "An Equal Tax and No Excise O Whiskey."

The most reliable contemporary record is for the six or seven striped flags. At one gathering the rebels raised a liberty pole with a flag featuring six bars. Hugh Henry Brackenridge, a moderate and eventual Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice who was opposed to both the tax and the violence, specifically mentions this flag in a book he wrote about the rebellion. “At Parkinson‟s Ferry, I think it was the morning of the second day, one was raised with a flag with six stripes, emblematical of the six counties there represented.”

Another handsome variation historians uncovered was one that has 7 stars and 7 bars, representing 5 Pennsylvania counties and 2 Virginia counties.

What all these described flags have in common are simplicity and an anti-Federal theme. Again, if one looks at the politics and people of the region the anti-Federal theme is not surprising. The people of western Pennsylvania (and many other western regions) were NOT, for the most part, federalists. They were of a distinct antifederalist tilt.

This wall flag has a tea-stained vintage effect printed into it, won’t crease or shrink thanks to the polyester material, and will last a long time. The flag measures 56" x 34.5". They are one-sided printed in the USA. Materials imported from Israel.

This kitchen scale is a great tool for anyone doing meal prep, baking, or tracking food. It’s lightweight and compact, so it doesn’t take up much space and is easy to store when not in use. Accuracy is spot on—it measures consistently in grams and ounces, which is perfect for portion control and precise recipes. The tare function works smoothly, making it easy to weigh multiple ingredients in one container. The stainless steel surface is a nice touch—it looks clean and is easy to wipe down after use. The display is clear and easy to read, even in lower light. For the price, it’s hard to beat. It does exactly what you need without any unnecessary extras. Pros: -Lightweight and compact -Accurate and consistent measurements -Easy-to-use tare function -Stainless steel surface (easy to clean) -Great value Cons: -Small size may not fit very large bowls -Basic features (no advanced tracking) Overall: A reliable, no-frills kitchen scale that gets the job done. Easy to use. Stays sealed. Stays charged.
Size: 12 Combo Travel Size
I had previously bought packing bags in a store — the kind the you had to seal and then roll/squish the air out of one end of the bag. It really took 2 people to remove most of the air. I took them to Mexico, and they were just OK. I switched to these vacuum bags before our family ski trip. What a great purchase! This set includes multiple sizes, which worked well for both everyday clothes and bulkier cold-weather gear. They also fit well inside different size suitcases. One tip: Fill the bag, seal it shut, squish some air out, but then suck the final air out with the bag already inside your suitcase. You can "massage" the clothes and guide how the bag flattens out for a really efficient use of your suitcase space. The organization you can achieve is really impressive. The bag material and valve is tough enough to not allow any air leaks. The red "glides" they provide make sure the seal is solid and easy to achieve. And the system is simple enough that I suspect that elementary kids or people with lower dexterity could operate it (my teens certainly had no issues packing themselves). After returning home, I folded all the bag along their original fold lines, charged up the "sucky thing" (which still held 75% of it's charge after being used at least 20 times), and tucked it all neatly in our travel drawer, ready for our international trip next month. Great value. High quality. I'd even go so far as to say they're fun to use.
