The Leopard 2A8 is a main battle tank jointly developed by German company KMW and Rheinmetall. It is the latest improved model of the Leopard 2 series and will debut as a prototype at the Brno International Defense and Security Technology Expo in May 2023.
In June 2024, KNDS Group publicly showcased this type of tank at the European Defense Exhibition.
The tank is improved based on the Leopard 2A7+, using multi-layer armor composed of steel, tungsten, composite fillers, and ceramic components, with a focus on strengthening the top and bottom protection of the turret. Equipped with the European "spoils of war" active protection system, integrated with EL/M-2133 phased array radar and ELO-5220 passive photoelectric sensor, achieving 360 degree detection coverage.
The power system adopts a 1600 horsepower engine with a top speed of 70 kilometers per hour, equipped with a third-generation thermal imaging system, digital fire control system, and omnidirectional observation system.
In January 2025, the Swedish Defense Materials Management Agency signed a contract with KNDS Group to purchase 44 tanks of this type
