Every now and again, you get a shot at something truly unique. Case in point: This Martin Custom Shop 28 Style Dreadnought with an Adirondack spruce top and flamed mahogany back and sides. Specially spec'd out by our Martin-loving team here at Russo Music, this Martin Custom Shop Expert build represents a unique artistic outlook brought to life by the artisans over at the Martin Custom Shop.

Here at Russo Music, we're delighted to hold the distinction of being a Martin Custom Expert dealer. What this means is we're part of a small circle of dealers privy to special and exclusive Martin Guitar models and builds. Where this brings us today is to this Martin Custom Shop dreadnought acoustic model with a number of high-quality specifications and woods. A one-of-a-kind model throws it over to a number of historical sights, sounds, and shapes for an altogether unique and compelling Custom Expert model.

This Custom Expert "D" Dreadnought begins with a Martin "D" dreadnought body brought together by Adirondack spruce and two-piece premium flamed mahogany – the latter of which hand-selected by us here at Russo Music. Rich and exquisite producing a full, authentic Martin dreadnought sound, these two tonewoods are decked out with Martin's Aging Toner gloss finish and Spanish cedar ribbons, respectively. Imparting a classy lived-in visual quality, this Custom Expert dreadnought's woods are visually, tangibly, and audibly breathtaking. Within the dreadnought body, Martin's X-Brace pattern comes together with hand-shaped scalloped spruce braces for expanded projection and tonal nuance. The model's 12-Fret dreadnought form hearkens to lesser-seen acoustic designs with a deeper reach on the neck that meets the body at the twelfth fret.

From here, this Custom Expert "D" brings on a select hardwood neck assembled through dovetail neck joint construction with Martin's Modern Adhesive. This more modern assembly features further uniqueness with a Modified V profile and a satin lacquer finish for a softer, geometric feel in hand. The model's High Performance taper compounds on this modernity for an effortless feel at every position.

The modernity of the neck is matched with an impressive fingerboard. Oiled black ebony makes up this board with twenty Standard frets across a sixteen-inch radius. An effortless feel on the fingertips complements this Custom Expert's intricate Mother of Pearl Maltese Snowflake inlays for a dazzling look up-close-and-personally.

Backing up this arrangement, this Custom Expert "D" features a number of high-quality hardware specifications. At the base of the 25.4" scale length, a black ebony Golden Era Modern Belly bridge lands with a drop-in compensated bone saddle. This element introduces a stable connection string-to-body while a bone nut and Grover nickel tuning machines plant strings at the headstock for smooth stringing and tuning accuracy. The headstock, as it happens, is another standout of this model with its square-slot slotted configuration that bends from usual Martin tradition.

Aesthetically, this Martin Custom Shop dreadnought shines with a number of intricate flourishes. On its flamed mahogany back, HD Zig-Zag back purfling appears for a detailed aesthetic element. Additional appointments coalesce across this model with a Style 28 Boltaron soundhole rosette, Antique White body binding, and mahogany body and neck stains with a rosewood neck filler top off the finer regions of this dreadnought for a totally impressive piece at every level.

For the 12-Fret dreadnought and slotted headstock fans of the world, this Martin Custom Shop Expert piece is a work from one artist's hands to yours.

Slightly Inaccurate but Works Well
Pros: Works perfectly for what I need it for. I use an aeropress and it's super easy to weigh the coffee going in and then the water on top of that. Then start the timer for the brew time and you've got a beautiful cup of coffee! Very bright display, easy to read, and comes with a rubber pad which makes cleanup easy. Cons: Not super accurate, but it's fine for making coffee unless you want to be exact. Sometimes the tare doesn't hold perfectly. For example, put your coffee on the scale. Tare it. Take it off. Put it back on. It might read a tenth of a gram or so one way or the other. Never impacted my coffee routine...

Been working well for over a year
Had this for over a year now and no real issues. The only issue I can think of is that if something is a bit too close to the scale, the scale can fluctuate a bit by a gram or so. Just make sure nothing is touching it, especially anything electronic. Beyond that, it's a no-nonsense scale that works great with actual tactile buttons. Its refresh rate can lag behind a tiny bit, but you get used to it by stopping your pours in anticipation. For example, I typically do 300mL pours in total, and I usually start slowing down/stopping at around 280g. Battery life is pretty good, but the battery life indicator doesn't do a good job of letting you know when you need to replace the batteries. So you may end up with it powering off mid-brew, but I've only had to replace the batteries once despite daily use over the past year or so. That being said, it's useful to also do stuff like the 4:6 method based on water level vs timer too. I'd also say it may not be extremely accurate as sometimes it fluctuates by .1 grams, but it is accurate enough for practical purposes. For reference, .1g is simply ~1 coffee bean, and unless you're an espresso perfectionist, 1 coffee bean isn't going to make any real difference. In summary: + Just the essentials if you only want the essentials + Tactile buttons + Display is pretty nice + Accurate enough for practical purposes + Battery life very good + Will work for at least a year, can't say any longer until I own it for longer + Great for the cost = WIll not refresh weight as quickly as say an acacia scale which costs at least four times as much, easy to compensate for - Battery life indicator isn't great, so it may power off mid-brew every half year or so - Sensitive to adjacent electronic devices, 1 or 2 inches is enough distance - Sensitive to adjacent objects, be mindful of anything that is touching the silicone, even if it's barely touching by a hair

Works Perfectly, Ignore "Drift" Reviews
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
I'm very happy with the accuracy and refresh rate of the scale. The two tone LED color scheme is a nice touch. I also like that the silicone cover is well-affixed to the scale and won't slide around. I only wish the scale came in white! Don't be fooled by other reviews. This scale doesn't "drift" any more or less than any other scale. Those people who say otherwise are likely storing it in a very different temperature environment than their use area. See photos for the test I did with boiling hot water in an uninsulated carafe. 0.0g drift on all tests, with or without the silicone protector, after several minutes of letting the carafe sit on the scale surface. The only time I experienced measurement drift was when I got the package from 30F freezing outdoor conditions, unboxed it and tried it out without letting the scale warm up to ambient. The measured weight slowly dropped until it warmed up to 70F room temp; since then it's been rock solid. That is totally normal for any scale that any manufacturer, cheap or expensive, makes. It's just how this kind of scale works. Overall if you're looking for a nice scale with timer functionality, I highly recommend the Greater Goods scale.

Precise and durable
Color: Birch
Best coffee scale for the price. No crazy features which makes it very easy to use. Small enough to store in a drawer and durable enough to not worry about it breaking. Scale is very precise which makes it great for V60 and Chemex
