In this early training phase, focus shifts away from fine detailing and onto building structural foundations: trunk chop scars are actively healing, structural branches are being selected and wired, and the tree is often grown in a oversized training pot to maximize vigor and thicken the trunk base. Because hornbeams naturally exhibit strong apical dominance (concentrating growth at the top), consistent directional pruning and structural wiring are essential to redirect energy downward, creating the dense, delicate ramification—the fine network of twigs—characteristic of a mature, majestic broadleaf bonsai.
