At the time number of writers and artists were inspired and even, in the case of George Orwell, migrated to Spain to fight or lend a hand themselves. In fact, people from various different political perspectives united to support the republican cause against Franco. Early on, a coalition of anarchists, trotskyites, socialists, and stalinists combined forces to fight Franco's fascist regime until stalinists began ruthlessly murdering their Spanish Republican allies in a craven attempt to gain power. In George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia, the author gives his account of his fighting with the republicans bravely before narrowly escaping stalinist death squads. (Incidentally, I'm happy to say I did the cover for Orwell's Homage to Catalonia for Random House.
