MILLER, Karl; Andrew O’HAGAN (preface); [HEANEY, Seamus]. Tretower to Clyro: Essays. London: Quercus. 2011.

8vo. Original dark green cloth, titles in gilt to spine, in dust jacket; pp. [viii], 232; extremities of jacket a little rubbed, slight cockling to outer margin of pp. 7-16, else a near fine copy; authorial inscriptions “For Andrew, with best wishes, Karl Miller”, “Hello Andrew, all the best, Andrew O’Hagan”, “Seamus Heaney” in black in to title (see below).

A lovely triple-signed first edition copy of this late volume of essays by the great literary scholar and critic Karl Miller, inscribed by Miller, Andrew O’Hagan and Seamus Heaney, the trio of friends who feature in, and contribute to, the book.

The great Karl Miller was literary editor of the Spectator, New Statesman, editor of The Listener, and founding editor of the London Review of Books. From 1974 to 1992, he was Lord Northcliffe Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London, a department he famously transformed along with Frank Kermode. His books include Cockburn's Millennium (winner of the James Tait Black memorial prize), Doubles, Authors, a life of James Hogg, and two volumes of autobiography. This range and scope is reflected in the essays collected in Tretower to Clyro.

There are essays on Anglo-Welsh borderlands (home to Francis Kilvert and Raymond Williams), on Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes, lan McEwan, Alistair MacLeod, Alice Munro, John McGahern, Anne Tyler, and a number of pieces on Scottish subjects. Andrew O’Hagan’s extended Foreword records a series of countryside excursions made with Miller and Seamus Heaney (the trio are pictured together).

This copy, with a ticket to the event at the 2012 Edinburgh Book Festival loosely laid in, is a lovely memento of the friendships movingly recounted in the book.

Our pup loves the cronch cronch!
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
I bought our 15 month old Coton several Chuck-It toys on an Amazon deal. He is incredibly playful, mischievous, and ball/toy obsessed, especially for anything that makes noise. He can also be very destructive so I love how durable most of their products are - they’re among our longest lasting toys and worth every penny. We have yet to take them to the dog park, but they’re a perfect size for sharing in play time. And they are keeping him busy at home - that’s a good thing. He loves investigating the crunchy-cronchy-crinkly sound which is a nice change from squeakers. It can withstand his destructive chewing well-being, gentle on his little teeth. I love that. Chuck-It is thinking outside the box with a variety of balls to keep dogs engaged! I do worry about the crinkle plastic inside because it is accessible because of the air holes and it feels a little sharp. So this will have to be an at home toy so we can monitor his play.

My dog loves it!
Style: Ball, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
This crunch ball was a Christmas gift for my 65lbs fur baby. It’s now mid April and he still loves it. He loves running after it and chomping down on it. It is still in good shape despite all the chomping it’s gotta . I highly recommend. He goes back to this toy agin and again! Great buy.

Our first babies favorite and longest lasting ball yet and he is fixing to be 7.

Toughest ball we have found yet. Our doberman loves Chuckit! Balls especially the crunch one. He spreads all the balls and toys we have bought but these lasted the longest. The crunch and the glow in the dark are usually his pick but he has several different choices.

Well made, lots of puppy fun
Color: Red
The dog loves this, has actually held together pretty well. She is a German Shorthair, so having a toy last this long with only the deer's feet chewed off is pretty good.
