Voor ieder paard, maar met name voor sportpaarden, zijn mineralen cruciaal voor het goed functioneren van het lichaam. Bij mineralen is het belangrijk dat ze voldoende aanwezig zijn in het lichaam en in het voer, maar ook dat ze in de juiste verhoudingen aanwezig zijn. Sportpaarden verbruiken bij hun inspanning extra mineralen en daarom is het belangrijk dat deze weer worden aangevuld. Mineralen spelen een belangrijke rol in veel verschillende lichaamsprocessen.
Ook vitaminen spelen een belangrijke rol voor het sportpaard. Ze zijn nodig voor allerlei processen in het lichaam en worden bij inspanning ook extra snel opgebruikt. Vitaminen zijn belangrijk voor het afweersysteem, het zenuwstelsel, de energieproductie en zij hebben vaak een functie als antioxidant. Het aminozuur L-carnitine is voor sportpaarden een belangrijke aanvulling. Het helpt het vrijmaken van extra energie, waardoor het paard meer energie beschikbaar heeft om de inspanning langer vol te houden. Zo verhoogt het de prestaties tijdens langdurige inspanningen. Ook vermindert L-carnitine de spierafbraak en de melkzuurproductie, waardoor de spieren minder verzuren. Het helpt het paard ook sneller te herstellen na inspanning.
