In Mantsjoerije zijn de winters koud en donker. De boerenbevolking stortte zich in de winters binnenshuis op het houtsnijden. Zo konden ze een beetje bijverdienen met het maken van lepels, borden et cetera. Dit ambacht is nog steeds springlevend. In Zweden worden de ontwerpen gemaakt in China worden ze met trots gesneden uit lindehout en geverfd met milieuvriendelijke verf.
