Voorzijde. Gebaarde portret van Émile Zola naar rechts, zijn naam in cursief links onder, de titel van de roman en de data 1885–1985 langs de rechterrand. Het portret is gebaseerd op eigentijdse foto's van Zola ten tijde van het schrijven van de Rougon-Macquart cyclus.

Achterzijde. Een industriële scène die bijna als een houtsnede leest: de schachtbok van een kolenmijn links, een rij fabrieksschoorstenen, een mijnwagen op de voorgrond. Het Republikeinse motto LIBERTÉ • ÉGALITÉ • FRATERNITÉ buigt erboven. Nominale waarde 100 F en datum 1985 eronder.

Context

Geslagen ter gelegenheid van het eeuwfeest van Germinal, Zola's roman uit 1885 over een mijnwerkersstaking in Noord-Frankrijk. De keuze om de schachtkop en de rookpluimen te plaatsen waar men normaal gesproken een allegorie van de Republiek zou vinden, is ongebruikelijk – het plaatst de industriële arbeid, de wereld waarover Zola schreef, in het middelpunt van de munt in plaats van als achtergrond. Geslagen in fijn zilver en in Belle Épreuve kwaliteit, met spiegelende velden en mat reliëf.

As an admirer of the work that Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy have done individually, I was sure that a collaboration, two “whos” getting together, would be a good hit. And a good it it is! The issue with these kind of books is what happens immediately after one has finished reading them. The issue is to put things into practice, and change the way we do things. This requires thinking, and thinking is hard, and in most cases we do NOT dedicate time to thinking, so the concepts slide into the past, and no change happens. Time for me, and everyone, to change this default state. This review is just the start of a written reflection, a “thinking on paper” exercise, like my friend and great thinker Jean Moroney calls it.
