De Sorbus aucuparia is een wilde soort die in geheel Europa voorkomt. Het groene blad verkleurd in de herfst naar een opvallende gele oranjerode kleur. In mei-juni toont de boom een witte bloesem, waarna er oranje/rode vruchten aan de boom verschijnen. De besjes zijn aantrekkelijk voor vogels, dus zorgen voor biodiversiteit in uw tuin.

De Sorbus aucuparia wordt in de Nederlandse benaming ook wel de wilde lijsterbes of de gewone lijsterbes genoemd. hij heeft zijn herkomst in Europa, Noord-Afrika en Turkije.

De Wilde lijsterbes is groot van formaat en daarom het beste geschikt om te planten in een grotere tuin. De boom staat het liefste op een plek in de zon of halfschaduw. Hij is goed winterhard en kan goed tegen de wind, echter niet tegen een plek in verharding. De boom is te planten in vrijwel elke grondsoort, dus zand- leem- en kleigrond. De boom is gewoonlijk niet giftig voor mensen of dieren, dus is ook geschikt om nabij een wei te planten. De boom staat in mei/juni in een witte bloei, en trekt daardoor ook bijen en vlinders aan.

De Sorbus aucuparia wordt vaak als aanplanting gebruikt in pleinen, daktuinen en grote tuinen. De boom kan indien nodig vanaf november t/m augustus gesnoeid worden.
