Sorbus decora is een brede ovaal/rondvormige Sorbus met een halfopen kroon. Deze soort valt onder de Rosaceae familie en kan 6 á 8 meter hoog worden. De Sorbus decora is een soort die zijn oorsprong heeft in Noord-Amerika. Het blauwgroene blad heeft een rode steel en verkleurd in de herfst naar een opvallende herfstkleur met gele, oranje, rode en paarse tinten. In mei/juni toont de boom een witte bloesem, waarna er dieprode vruchten aan de boom verschijnen. De besjes zijn aantrekkelijk voor vogels, dus zorgen voor biodiversiteit in uw tuin.

Gewasgroep en herkomst

De Sorbus decora valt onder de ‘Rosaceae’ familie oftewel de rozenfamilie. De Sorbus decora wordt in de Nederlandse benaming ook wel de lijsterbes genoemd. De Sorbus decora heeft zijn herkomst in Noord-Amerika, om exact te zijn in Oost-Canada.

Plantkenmerken

De Sorbus decora is kleiner van formaat en daarom geschikt om zowel in een kleinere tuin als in een grotere tuin te planten. De boom staat het liefste op een plek in de zon of halfschaduw. Hij is goed winterhard en kan goed tegen de wind, echter kan hij niet tegen een plek in verharding. De boom is te planten in vrijwel elke grondsoort, dus zand- leem- en kleigrond. De boom is gewoonlijk niet giftig voor mensen of dieren, dus is ook geschikt om nabij een wei te planten. Aan de boom verschijnt in mei/juni een witte bloesem, deze bloesem is erg aantrekkelijk voor bijen en vlinders.

Toepassing en nazorg

De Sorbus decora wordt vaak als aanplanting gebruikt in brede en smalle straten, parken en grote en kleine tuinen. De boom kan indien nodig vanaf november t/m februari en juni t/m augustus gesnoeid worden. De eerste twee groeiseizoenen heeft de boom genoeg water nodig, wekelijks één grote gift. Birds seem to love it!

I grew up using homemade hummingbird food dyed a bright red color with koolaid or food dye. But for the first time in my adult life, I'm somewhere that has a lot of hummingbirds and I wanted to provide them with the best juice possible. I decided on this juice because I like that it has hummingbird friendly electrolytes and is in a concentrate so I can make my own preferred dilution. I am in a very hot desert climate so I've been doing a 1-3/3.5 ratio to help keep them extra hydrated and the hummingbirds and bees are loving it. We have four feeders. Two closer to the ground and two on our second floor balcony. The birds and bees have been visiting all four regularly and our cats are loving the show. I swear my youngest cat gets most excited about the bees. I know the bees are seen as problematic for most but the birds don't seem to mind them sharing a few feeding holes and we don't mind feeding the bees too. The bees are probably more important for our ecosystem than the birds anyway. I took away one star because the seals on the bottles aren't very strong and both had leaked during transit, one was very messy and crusted with dried sugar. Since these are technically supposed to be refrigerated after opening I probably should have returned them but upon reading the ingredients, I don't see a reason that they would have gone bad without showing obvious signs of spoilage. It's basically gatorade for birds. I even took a sip to see if I died. I was fine so figured it's fine for the birds too. If the next order is also leaking I'll consider going elsewhere but for now we have happy birds, bees and cats.

From what I've read, they are attracted to the color of the feeder more so than the smell of the nectar / food itself. I used this in a red hanging hummingbird feeder on a second-floor shaded balcony. The feeder had only been up a short time, and the nectar was accepted quickly.
