The Estate
As the oldest of the Bordeaux Grands Crus, Château Haut-Brion boasts a rich heritage built over five centuries of history. Founded in 1533 by Jean de Pontac in the Graves region, the wine of Château Haut-Brion quickly became coveted and appreciated by Europe’s greatest monarchs. In 1663, Samuel Pepys, a member of the English Parliament, unknowingly contributed to the success of Château Haut-Brion through his diary, writing, "And there I drank a sort of French wine called Ho-Bryan that had a very particular good taste that I had never met with..." The legend was born. As the first Grand Cru Classé outside the Médoc in 1855 and recognized as a Classified Growth in the Official Classification of Graves Wines in 1959, Château Haut-Brion continues to write the legend of the world’s greatest wines, confirming its exceptional consistency vintage after vintage.
The Vineyard
A benchmark among the great wines of Pessac-Léognan and located at the heart of the Pessac urban area, Château Haut-Brion possesses an exceptional terroir with soils composed of multicolored gravel, giving rise to sumptuous, elegant, precise wines of incredible consistency from one vintage to the next.
The Vintage
The season began with significant rainfall, ideal for replenishing water reserves, followed by a mild February that encouraged early budbreak. The April frost had minimal impact on the vineyard, and May was clement. Flowering was homogeneous and of high quality. June rains compensated for the water deficit before an exceptionally hot and dry summer. Despite these conditions, the vines thrived, supported by the expertise of the teams and adapted viticultural practices. Harvesting for the whites began on August 17, making the 2022 vintage the earliest since 2003. The red harvest started on August 29. The vineyard’s health was exceptional.
