Het verhaal evoceert op voortreffelijke wijze de sfeer van net voor, tijdens en na de tweede wereldoorlog, het lot van de lagere sociale klasse, collaboratie en valse schijn.
Verlangen, troebele intriges en onlogische gedragingen, levensvervreemding, gezonde daadvaardigheid, positieve levensdrang, liefde en berusting wisselen elkaar af.
Na het overlijden van zijn eerste vrouw Aleidis, met wie hij drie kinderen heeft, hertrouwt Arnold Alban met Denise. Een ambitieuze vrouw die radicale en nietsontziende maat-regelen neemt om te krijgen wat ze wil. Hij zelf streeft mateloos naar roem en carrière, probeert koste wat kost een hogere positie op de sociale ladder te vinden.
