Als koninklijke architecten strijden spelers om indruk te maken op hun koning en hun adellijke status te behouden door verschillende oriëntatiepunten te bouwen in zijn nieuw aangestelde domein. Spelers moeten grondstoffen verzamelen, leerlingen inhuren en hun personeel in de gaten houden. Dit zijn verraderlijke tijden, en rivaliserende architecten zullen voor niets stoppen om je voortgang te vertragen. Blijf je deugdzaam, of word je gevonden in het gezelschap van dieven en zwarthandelaren?Het doel van Architects of the West Kingdom is om de speler te zijn met de meeste overwinningspunten (OP) aan het einde van het spel. Punten worden verdiend door het bouwen van verschillende gebouwen en het voortschrijden van de werkzaamheden aan de aartsbisschoppelijke kathedraal. Gedurende het spel moeten spelers veel morele beslissingen nemen. Echter, pas aan het einde van het spel zal hun deugd worden beoordeeld.
