Blad en bloei

De bloemen van deze struik zijn donkerroze, paars (of purper) en bloeien zomers van ca. augustus tot en met september. De bladeren zijn donkergroen van kleur en verkleuren geel in de herfst. De volwassen hoogte van deze middelgrote heester is ca. 3 meter. Deze winterharde Hibiscus soort verdraagt een temperatuur tot -20 graden Celcius.

Aanplanten in de tuin

De Hibiscus syriacus 'Purple Ruffles' is geschikt voor een warme plaats in uw tuin. Deze mooie tuinplanten zijn ideaal op bijvoorbeeld beschutte (dak)tuinen op het zuiden en dicht bij bebouwing. Deze tuinplant wenst een matig voedselrijke, vochthoudende tot vochtige, 'gemiddelde' bodem. Dus niet te zware of te lichte grond en een vrij neutrale zuurgraad (pH = 6 - 8). Staat graag in een plekje in de volle zon en verdraagt zomerse hitte redelijk, mits de standplaats voldoende vochthoudend is. Kan bij nachtvorst in april-mei schade oplopen. Voorkom langdurig nat staan in de winter en herfst.

Bijzonderheden

De Hibiscus is een groot geslacht. Er bestaan meer dan 200 soorten. Deze Hibiscus soort is winterhard, maar jonge planten kunt u het beste toch tegen de vorst beschermen. De Hibiscus syriacus wordt ook wel de 'tuinhibiscus' genoemd. Komt ook voor onder de naam Hibiscus syriacus 'Sanchonyo'.
