De verwende en onhandige Shozo bevindt zich midden in een voortdurende strijd tussen zijn ex-vrouw Shinako en haar jongere opvolger Fukuko. Shinako heeft alles verloren: haar huis, haar status en de eerbied die haar als getrouwde vrouw ten deel viel. Maar het enige wat ze werkelijk lijkt te missen is de elegante schildpadkat Lily, die bij Shozo is blijven wonen. Terwijl Shinako smeekt om Lily bij zich te mogen houden en alle mogelijke listen verzint om dat voor elkaar te krijgen, houdt Shozo zich op de achtergrond en wil hij het liefst alleen gelaten worden met zijn geliefde kat. Zijn onwil om afstand te doen van Lily resulteert in een excentrieke liefdesdriehoek tussen hem en de twee vrouwen, en onthult uiteindelijk bij wie zijn ware affecties liggen. Tanizaki geldt, samen met Kawabata en Oë, als een van de drie ‘grote Japanse auteurs’. Zijn romans en korte verhalen beschrijven een bijzondere confrontatie van eeuwenoude Japanse tradities met een meer westerse levenswijze.
