18 maanden houtlagering voor Carmenere Gran Reserva

De productie is volledig in handen van het familiebedrijf Carta Vieja. Het wijnhuis werd in 1825 opgericht, maar begon pas in 1985 met het op de markt brengen van hun eigen wijnen. Daarvoor leverden ze hun druiven aan andere toonaangevende Chileense wijnhuizen. Vandaag de dag staat de zevende generatie aan het roer. Met wijngaarden in het bekende Valle Central bezit de familie een van Zuid-Amerika’s meest productieve en wonderbaarlijke wijnregio’s. Het klimaat is gevarieerd, dankzij de vele microklimaten. Dat is de reden waarom er veel verschillende druivensoorten goed gedijen. Tegen het begin van mei zijn de Carmanere druiven perfect gerijpt. Tijdens een strenge controle in de wijngaard worden de druiven geoogst. In de wijnmakerij volgt vervolgens een koude inweking van 5 dagen. Hierop volgt de fermentatie die doorzet in een houtlagering in Franse eikenhouten vaten voor maar liefst 18 maanden.

Een gebalanceerde rode wijn van Carta Vieja

En dan heb je een bijzondere wijn in handen. Een diep robijnrode kleur met paarse schitteringen in het glas. Intense aroma’s verwelkomen je van kersen en zwarte pruimen die ondersteund worden door geroosterde en rokerige tonen die te dankzij zijn aan de houtlagering. In de smaak fluweelzachte tannines die zoet en goed ontwikkeld zijn. Een gebalanceerde wijn die goed combineert bij vleesgerechten of een gevarieerde kaasplank.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
