Weinig albums riepen zulke reacties op en hadden zo'n impact als het oer-debuut van The Stooges. Voor de meeste luisteraars die het album kort na de release in 1969 — in dezelfde week als Woodstock — tegenkwamen, leek het alsof het van een andere planeet kwam, ondanks het feit dat de nummers de omgeving van de band in Detroit en jeugdige onvrede weerspiegelen.
