Het archief kon deels worden gered en werd in de jaren zeventig herontdekt. Er kwam een mapje uit tevoorschijn met het onvoltooide manuscript van de roman Erdbeeren. Roth beschrijft hierin de jeugd van zijn alter ego Naphtali Kroj in een kleine stad in Galicië, waar hij na de dood van zijn vader (die dronken van zijn slee valt en doodvriest) eerst in dienst treedt van een barbier en een kleermaker, om vervolgens bij een doodgraver terecht te komen, met wie hij een lucratieve handel opzet in stukjes van de stroppen van zelfmoordenaars, omdat die geluk zouden brengen. Op ontroerend mooie en vaak humoristische wijze tekent Roth de wederwaardigheden op van de inwoners, onder wie een advocaat die een enorm hotel laat bouwen in Amerikaanse stijl. Als het eindelijk af is blijft het leegstaan, behalve als de rijke handelaar Britz er in de winter terugkeert ‘als een boodschapper van God’. De inwoners leven dan voor even op, er wordt met geld gestrooid: ‘En toen hij vertrok liet hij gelukkige mensen achter, maar hij zag er niet meer zo fris uit als bij zijn aankomst. Hij was moe en gebroken, zijn huid was bleek, zijn vriendelijke ogen straalden niet meer. Zo vermoeiend is liefdadigheid.’

Great option for a great price

I love these sandals. They are well made, true to size and soft suede. They are lightweight and feel just like my UGG goldenstar sandals. (These are not as adjustable, so if you have narrow or wide feet, these may not be for you) These a great value for the money, especially for medium width feet. The strap across the toe is not adjustable, but fit my feet just fine. The ankle strap was a good length for me. And the Velcro is strong. These sandals are a great value for the money. I will probably start looking into kookaburra before I rush to buy the more expensive ones now.
