Dirk Verhofstadt bespreekt zestig boeken van denkers die met hun ideeën gestalte gaven en geven aan het liberale gedachtengoed. Samen vormen ze De liberale canon. In zijn essay Grondslagen van het liberalisme bundelt hij de kerngedachten van deze liberale denkers bovendien tot één alomvattend geheel voor meer vrijheid, rechtvaardigheid en vooruitgang.
