Pas in 2007 werd de term de cloud voor het eerst door de New York post gebruikt waarbij de cloud staat voor een netwerk dat met computers die erop aangesloten zijn een soort 'wolk van computers'

Tegenwoordig wordt de cloud door mensen voornamelijk gebruikt om plaatjes in op te slaan.
