Barokensemble Les Abbagliati viert haar tiende verjaardag met een eerste cd: D'Astorga & Lalli, twee namen die wellicht niet meteen een belletje doen rinkelen.

Het ensemble bestaat uit muzikanten die elkaar al kennen vanuit hun studietijd aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel en intussen elk een indrukwekkende traject gevolgd hebben bij grote, gerenommeerde ensembles als Ricercar Consort, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Pygmalion, Il Gardellino en La Petite Bande. Twee van de leden van Les Abbagliati wonen trouwens sinds kort in Tienen.

De basis voor deze fijne plaat legt sopraan Soetkin Elbers als ze in de Nationale Bibliotheek van Oostenrijk in Wenen een oud manuscript vindt met daarin cantates van o.a. de Italiaanse componisten Emanuele d'Astorga (1680-1757) en Giovanni Battista Bononcini (1670-1747). Van de eerste weten we dat hij goede relaties onderhield met librettist Domenico Lalli (1679-1741), die onder andere werk afleverde voor Vivaldi en Scarlatti.  Bononcini verbleef ruim 12 jaar in London waar hij moest wedijveren met ene Georg Friedrich Häendel.

Les Abbagliati hebben de puzzelstukjes van deze componisten en librettist met elkaar verbonden tot een hoogst aangenaam luisterwerk. Het ensemble heeft op de cd instrumentaal werk van Haendel, Vivaldi en Scarlatti afgewisseld met cantates van Bononcini en d'Astorga.  Barokke pareltjes waarbij Les Abbagliati hun hele arsenaal de nodige aandacht geven: klavecimbel, traverso, cello, viool en zang staan garant voor bijna een uur genieten. Sopraan Soetkin Elbers voelt zich duidelijk op haar gemak in de recitatieven en aria's waarin de emoties rond gewonnen of verloren liefdes elkaar afwisselen, de musici leveren een boeiende en smetteloze interactie tussen de instrumenten af. Zeer mooi werk. 

Bonuspunt: twee van de drie cantates op de cd werden nooit eerder opgenomen. Enig minpuntje: van een Belgisch ensemble hadden we naast een Engelse, Franse en Duitse versie ook een Nederlandse versie van het begeleidend boekje verwacht. Gelukkig wordt het oor meer dan voldoende verwend.

This book really helps organize a process that is inherently chaotic

I'm working on a series of novels about a world of talking animals that grows up after humans die out from complications of climate change. Every species has its own culture. I got through the first book and well into the second before I realized that I needed some way to codify all the cultural details. I had lots of ideas, but no way to organize them, and as I moved towards the third book of the series, which would require creating seven or eight whole cultures, I was feeling overwhelmed. Creating Life and the free templates the author provides as a download are proving to be very useful tool. I look forward to reading the other two books in this series, too.

Both books in this series are worthwhile reference sources

Great books--I got both this one and Creating Places. I simply stumbled upon both books online when looking for something about plotting, and I bought them both, and am glad I did. I'm a fairly experienced writer in literary genres, but fantasy/sci-fi are different. The first book I got, Creating Places, was immediately useful as I was creating a land ringed with tall mountains, and I wondered about rainfall--this book answered my question about how mountains effect rainfall! It's not like you couldn't look some of this stuff up in other ways, but having it all in one place was very useful to me. This one still had tips I was interested in, but I agree with the reviewer who noted it did feel like it was more about world building for world building's sake (at least in this book). Plenty of things didn't apply to what I'm writing, but if you use these as a handy reference--rather than a "how to" book, I still think there is a lot of use here. (Plus, when I bought it, the book was under $3, so I figured why not?)
