Dansen wordt haar leven en allesomvattende passie. Maar om de top te bereiken, is passie niet genoeg. Het gaat om keihard werken en heel veel offers brengen. Zo sprookjesachtig als de wereld van het klassieke ballet op het toneel is, achter de schermen is het een wereld vol bloed, zweet en blaren. Het lukt De Jongh: ze weet de absolute wereldtop te behalen als soliste van Het Nationale Ballet.

Als Igone in korte tijd haar moeder verliest en zelf moeder wordt van zoon Hugo, is ze genoodzaakt alle emoties aan de kant te schuiven om te kunnen blijven presteren. Ook tijdens de turbulente periode met haar scheiding van collega-balletdanser Mathieu blijft ze doorgaan. De dalen worden gelukkig afgewisseld met hoogtepunten: door bezoeken van prinses Beatrix aan haar voorstellingen, doordat ze de muze wordt van grootmeester Hans van Maanen en wanneer ze geluk in de liefde vindt. 

Dansen is haar leven maar soms is het tijd om te stoppen. Na 24 jaar besluit Igone Het Nationale Ballet, haar veilige thuishaven, te verlaten. Alleen wie ben jij als dat wat jouw leven altijd heeft bepaald, wegvalt? Hoe vind je jezelf opnieuw uit? Igone is het verhaal van een absolute ster, een Nederlandse ballerina die de wereldtop bereikt. Maar ook van een vrouw die probeert alle ballen hoog te houden en een goede moeder, vriendin en echtgenote wil zijn die haar eigen koers vaart. Igone vertelt openhartig over haar bijzondere en turbulente leven, de wondere wereld van klassiek ballet en de kracht die je kunt putten uit je moeilijkste momenten.

A familiar story, just with…..less.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
