De romancier, criticus en journalist Johan de Meester (1860-1930) was rond 1900 een centrale figuur in het literaire veld. Hij publiceerde veel romans, recenseerde jarenlang voor onder andere De Gids en de Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant, bemiddelde voor schrijvers en genootschappen en fungeerde als bemiddelaar voor een nieuwe generatie schrijvers. In Gedenk te leven worden zijn uiteenlopende werkzaamheden voor het eerst in samenhang bestudeerd en gecontextualiseerd. Aukje van Hout laat zien hoe De Meester en veel van zijn tijdgenoten schatplichtig waren aan de Tachtigers, maar tegelijkertijd zochten naar een eigen stem. Daarbij was niet langer het pessimisme van het naturalisme leidend, maar hervond men nieuwe levenslust. ‘Memento Mori’ werd ‘Gedenk te leven’. Van Hout brengt proza, essays, correspondentie en recensies met elkaar in verband en biedt een veelheid aan perspectieven op leven, werk en schrijverschap van De Meester en het literaire veld van 1900-1920. De Meester en zijn tijdgenoten acteerden te midden van een snel veranderende maatschappij. Gedenk te leven biedt dan ook een kleurrijk beeld van een schrijverschap en literatuurhistorische periode die verrassend modern blijken te zijn.

She hunts out all the bunnies and then brings the carrot to me to refill. I refill it, and then she takes the refilled carrot back to her spot and hunts them all out again. If I can't find one of the bunnies (because it's gotten stuck in the couch cushion, for example), I ask her "where's the bunny?" and she helps me find it! This dog is a ferocious chewer but she doesn't chew these toys! It's like she instinctively knows they are for hunting, not chewing. As a result, they have lasted a long time and provide hours of quality fun. Great value!
