Grootste eigenaar van Barolo-wijngaarden

In het plaatse La Morra bevindt zich het wijnbedrijf Beni di Batasiolo. Hier hebben we te maken met de grootste eigenaar van Barolo-wijngaarden. ‘Beni’ is een Piemontese aanduiding voor bezit, grond of wijngaard. Naast de zestig hectare Barola bezit het wijnhuis ook elders in de Piëmonte nog eens zestig hectare wijngaard. Dankzij de vele hectare is Batasiolo in staat om een compleet scala aan hoogwaardige Italiaanse wijnen te produceren, variërend van klassiek rood tot delicaat wit. Net als de Barolo Riserva is Batasiolo het werk van de Dogliani-familie. De familie belichaamt al vijf generaties lang hun passie voor wijn. De familie Dogliani onderging veel veranderingen en omwentelingen in dit pittoreske landschap. Waarschijnlijk meer dan 50 of 100 jaar geleden. Maar alleen op deze manier kon het familiebedrijf floreren. In 1978 verwierf de familie Dogliani de historische wijnmakerij Kiola. Met zijn zeven wijnmakerijen in deze belangrijke regio zijn de beste omstandigheden beschikbaar om de beroemde Nebbiolo da Barolo-druif te telen.

De geur en smaak van Batasiolo Barolo Riserva

De druiven worden zorgvuldig geoogst en geselecteerd. Uiteindelijk rijpt de Batasiolo Barolo Riserva minimaal 36 maanden op eiken houten fusten en hierna volgt nog een fles lagering in de kelders van Batasiolo. Deze fles lagering is ook erg van belang omdat de wijn hier helemaal van tot rust komt, dit is ongeveer 12 maanden, beetje afhankelijk van het oogstjaar. De wijn kleur intens granaatrood in het glas. De geur is overweldigend, vol en complex te noemen. Met aroma’s van jam, gedroogd fruit, specerij, pruimen, kers, chocolade, vanille en leer. Deze Barolo past goed bij kaas, pasta en rood vlees.

A familiar story, just with…..less.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
