Op een avond in 1983 - ik was tweeëndertig - vielen in Gent speurders met een huiszoekingsbevel het abortuscentrum binnen. Ik werkte er als abortusarts, in de illegaliteit, want zwangerschapsafbreking was toen in België nog verboden. Er stonden zware straffen op.

Zo begint het hallucinante verhaal van dokter Rein Bellens. De huiszoeking leidt tot urenlange ondervragingen en mondt uit in het monsterproces van Gent. Met zestig (!) beklaagden verschijnen ze voor de rechtbank: dokters, psychologen en verpleegkundigen, maar ook vrouwen die een abortusingreep hebben gekregen, en zelfs hun partners. Vrijspraak? Veroordeling? De procedure sleept jaren aan.

De verdachten laten zich door het gerecht niet intimideren. Proces of geen proces, het abortuscentrum dat na de huiszoeking gesloten was, moet en zal heropenen. Meer nog, de beklaagden gaan in de tegenaanval. Ze eisen een abortuswet en voeren met allerlei acties druk uit op politici. Uiteindelijk keurt het parlement de wet goed, maar koning Boudewijn weigert ze te ondertekenen. Tussen de vorst en de topministers ontstaat een nooit geziene machtsstrijd. Niet alleen deze 'minikoningskwestie', maar het hele boek leest als een onvervalste thriller.

It was repetitive at times as well as struggled with telling not showing. So we didn’t always feel like we were experiencing things with the main character. There were also some plot holes but they may still be answered in part 2. Now this isn’t to be said I didn’t enjoy parts of the story. I loved the almost instant love between Mila and Oliver.
