Begin 1985 was Michael J. Fox een van de grootste televisiesterren en zijn bekendheid stond op het punt nóg groter te worden. Om dat te bereiken diende hij erin te slagen om een zelfs voor Hollywood ongehoorde dubbele opdracht succesvol te voltooien.

Overdag repeteerde hij en nam afleveringen op van de populaire sitcom Family Ties; toen kreeg hij de kans van zijn leven. Al snel wijdde hij zijn avonden aan de nieuwe tijdreisfilm Back to the Future, geregisseerd door Robert Zemeckis en geproduceerd door Steven Spielberg. Vanaf dat moment bestond zijn leven uit overdag een sitcom en ’s avonds een film en dat dag in dag uit, maand na maand.

De nachtelijke pendeltocht die Fox aflegde van de Paramount-geluidsstudio naar de filmset van Universal Studios, van de ene droombaan naar de andere, werd zijn eigen ruimtetijdcontinuüm. Gedurende de korte momenten tussendoor probeerde hij nog enkele minuten slaap mee te pakken.

Tijdens deze periode gaf Alex P. Keaton – Fox’ personage in Family Ties - het stokje door aan Marty McFly – Fox’s personage in de drie Back to the Future-films. De bravoure van Alex, het talent van Marty en de komische virtuositeit van Fox versmolten tot een heel bijzonder geheel.
