In de 19e eeuw werden op grote schaal paupers uit het hele land naar Drenthe gebracht. Het was de bedoeling om daar beschaafde mensen van hen te maken. Het experiment begon uit ideële motieven, maar liep uit op een mislukking. Mensen leefden onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden en kregen al gauw een stigma opgeplakt. En dan wilde niemand meer met hen te maken hebben. Ze verloren hun zelfstandigheid, en wisten zich niet meer te redden in de buitenwereld. In totaal hebben meer dan honderdduizend mensen in de pauperkoloniën gezeten. Vandaag de dag zijn er zo’n één miljoen Nederlanders die van hen afstammen, waaronder bekende Nederlanders als Alexander Pechtold en Ruud Lubbers.
