De roos is een bladverliezende struik en wordt beschouwd als de "koningin der bloemen"; ze gaf haar naam aan het hele geslacht van planten. De Damastroos komt uit de Perzische regio en zou van daaruit door de kruisvaarders zijn geïntroduceerd. De typische vorm van de Rosa damasena is licht klimroosachtig met licht knikkende roze bloemen. De soort die tegenwoordig als olieroos wordt gekweekt in Turkije, Marokko, Bulgarije, India, Perzië of Rusland, wordt Rosa damascena trigintipetala genoemd.
